Parametric EQ
A parametric equalizer allows for more precise control over the frequencies that are being adjusted – unlike graphic equalizers which have a fixed set of frequency bands with pre-set levels.
A parametric EQ typically has three primary controls: frequency, gain, and bandwidth (or “Q-factor”). The frequency control sets the center frequency of the EQ band, the gain control determines how much boost or cut is applied to that frequency, and the bandwidth or “Q-factor” control adjusts the width of the EQ band. This allows for fine-tuning of the EQ curve, which can be useful for correcting issues in a recording or for shaping the overall tonal balance of a mix.
In addition to the primary controls, parametric EQs may also have additional features such as high-pass and low-pass filters, and sometimes even shelving EQs.
