Distortion
In acoustics, distortion is the unwanted distortion of a signal though amplification. In guitar music, this effect is actively used to get alternate sound characteristics. It is mostly achieved by clipping an audio signal (by overdriving a tube amp or with an effects pedal) to add sustain and harmonic and inharmonic overtones.
